Heworth secured an amazing Challenge Cup victory at Ideal Isberg to progress to the second round of the famous competition.

The Villagers began the game as massive underdogs, giving away two divisions and 25 places in the National Conference League standings to their Humberside foes. But the Hull-based hosts could have few complaints about the 19-8 defeat.

Ideal Isberg were partly undone by their own indiscipline as a 15-2 penalty count against them saw Heworth's Dave Carling kick four penalties to add to one conversion.

The first two cancelled out a Stuart Humphries try scored against the run of play, and the Villagers went on to take the lead through a try by Nikki Wilson, who won the race for Brendan Carlyle's clever kick.

A Mick Harrison field goal gave the York side a 9-4 interval lead, with Carling soon adding another penalty and then tagging on the extras to Steve Barnard's brilliant try.

That game-breaking touchdown saw Barnard break the line 40 metres out and side-step inside the full-back.

Ideal's Les Moss notched a try late on but it was mere consolation as Carling's final goal saw Heworth rightly have the last word.

"We outplayed them in all departments, particularly up front," said Heworth spokesman Ken Sykes.

"It was a fairly heavy pitch which meant a lot of the wok was done in the middle and our lads rose to the task.

"There were some excellent displays, the man of the match being Kevin Gott at hooker. He got the award for a monumental tackling stint.

"But right though the pitch there were tremendous performances, notably Simon Harrison at prop, Jason Kane in the second row, and player-coach Brendan Carlyle."
