AS a regular visitor to Munster, I enjoyed your article on this fine city in Weekender (November 24). In particular, your reporting of the local transport system was very accurate.
In Munster the authorities have managed that which the City of York Council seems to find either impossible or to be anathema to its beliefs. This is the accommodation of public transport, private cars, cyclists and pedestrians in its city without the log jams that are such an enduring misery of cities such as York.
I have not encountered road humps, chicanes or mini-roundabouts in Munster. Yet the traffic, wheeled and pedestrian, moves in a far safer and more disciplined manner than here.
If you want to know one of the reasons for this, try crossing the road against the 'red man' and you will have to pay 60 Marks per person, on the spot, for your lack of consideration for the safety of yourself and others.

...I AGREE with M Gell's letter (November 24) about the council causing traffic problems. With the ridiculous delays caused by the A64 roadworks, forcing many more people to drive through the city centre, it is time to remove the deliberate, unsynchronised settings on the traffic lights.
Making the lights change more frequently would allow traffic to move more freely and prevent the roads from becoming blocked up. Gillygate is a good example of this.
When is the council going to learn that doing things to deliberately annoy people, does just that? It doesn't make the problem go away.
