HUNDREDS of singers packed the Barbican Centre for the 44th York Community Carol Concert.
The event, being held a little early this year because the Barbican is to host the UK Snooker Championships from December 8, saw skilled singers and musicians lead enthusiastic singers through a range of Christmas favourites.
These included Hark The Herald Angels Sing, O Come All Ye Faithful and Silent Night.
School choirs were provided by St Olave's, in York, and Riccall Community Primary, with the multi-school York Area Schools Senior Concert Band giving musical accompaniment.
The line-up was complemented by the popular Escrick-based Tuesday Singers.
Acclaimed teenage musician Angelina Warburton had chosen to play harp for the concert, while father, John, was wielding the baton for the 23rd time in his role as musical director.
John is known as 'York's Mr Music Man' and has been made President of York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society for 2002.
The concert traditionally raises thousands of pounds for the Evening Press annual appeal and the Lord Mayor and Sheriff's Christmas Cheer Fund.
The next Evening Press appeal cause has yet to be chosen, after the successful campaign to raise £2 million for a new extension to the Tadcaster Road St Leonard's Hospice.
