THE street markets in Malton, Helmsley and Pickering are nice little earners for Ryedale District Council.
So why, over the years, have they been allowed to become so unsightly - so tatty?
The frames are old and the metal ones are rusty.
Awnings have to be provided by the stallholders who use old tarpaulins, sheets of plastic and rubber ponchos.
I am told new metal frames are on the way because some wobbly ones are now considered a danger to the public.
Town Manager Mick Gains wants to promote the Malton Market this Christmas as 'the biggest and best' to boost the town's ailing economy.
Will he get any help from the council to smarten it up in time for his ambitious Christmas show?
The markets are the responsibility of debt-free Ryedale District Council.
Compare it with York where the stalls have fairly new and sturdy frames plus colourful awnings.
There's also covered walk-ways between the stalls to keep customers dry and a welcoming, customer-friendly image courtesy of City of York Council.
It just shows what can be done if there's a will!
