York RI 'A' chess team suffered heartache again in the Woodhouse Cup when losing 5 -4 at home to Hull 'A'.
After previously losing to Sheffield 'A' it was imperative that York beat Hull, but despite fielding an exceptionally strong team York just failed.
All the games were close and seven were drawn, with Hull having two wins and York one from Gawain Jones. York's draws came from David Adams, Norman Stephenson, David Wise, Tony Slinger, Paul Hopwood, Jon Griffith and Paul Johnson.
The defeat means York will not be able to win the Woodhouse Cup this season.
York RI 'B' had a comfortable 6-2 win against St Andrews. Early wins by Patrick Gower and Norman Andrews were followed by wins from Tim Turner, Barry Marshall and Richard Mounce. The two draws came from Eric Key and Laurance Cornhill.
York RI 'C' defeated Hull 'B' by 5-2 with wins from Richard Hardy, Neville Pearce, Sri Sriharan, Mick Beavers, and John Lafferty and a draw from David Findlay.
York RI 'D' produced probably the best result of the day when they drew at Calderdale 'B'.
Graham Marshall and Fahad Yousif on the top two boards both had very creditable draws and Aaron Barker, Arjuna Prithiviraj and Bill Fulton all won to give York a deserved share of the spoils.
Cavaliers beat Lady Anne Middleton for the second successive week, this time in the LTKO Cup. Wins from Steve Huxley, Richard Hardy, Peter Cloudsdale, Owen Robson and draw from Paul Hopwood sealed a 4-1 win.
LAM's points came from a win by John Griffith and draw by Tony Slinger.
Elsewhere in the LTKO, Kings had their first win of the season when they defeated Nowhere Men 5- with wins from John Bennett, Don Baldwin, Rachel Mothersill, Rodney Mitchinson and John Lafferty and a draw from Peter Blacker against Neil Atkin.
Lady Anne Middleton 2 succeeded where their first team failed and progressed to the second round by defeating University 2 by 5- with wins from John Knowles, Colin Snowball, Sam Watson, Chris Summerville and Andy Wade and a draw between Rob Joyce and Schuller.
The first game below is a stylish finish from Robson and the second is from Mounce and shows that you should never resign prematurely.
