York College came up trumps at the British Schools Orienteering Championships, held in Sherwood Pines in Nottingham.

All four team members were fairly inexperienced runners but, running against over 1,000 other competitors, theyn finished second in the year 13 boys competition and second in the Tertiary Trophy.

The York College team comprised Adam Stirk (ex-Millthorpe), who finished tenth overall, Justin Davies (ex-Selby High) 11th, Chris Bielby (ex-Millthorpe) 17th and Roger Griffith (ex-Millthorpe) 20th.

In the year 13 Boys competition the boys finished on 38 points with winners Clayesmore School finishing on 24 points.

In the Tertiary Trophy, York College went close to winning the title, finishing on 58 points, just seven adrift of Scarborough Sixth Form College.

Helen Gardner, York College orienteering coach said: "I was really pleased with the team and their individual performances too. This was a large competition for juniors and it was quite a challenge. They all ran well and showed off their competitive spirit."

FOOTBALL

NORTH Yorkshire were beaten 3-2 by Cumbria in their latest English Schools FA game at Catterick.

They will now need to beat Northumberland at the University of Nothumbria on Saturday or Cleveland at either Scarborough or Whitby next month to progress through to the next stage of the county competition.

Scorers against Cumbria were Craig Anderson (York) and Craig Radcliffe (Harogate and Craven).

In their previous game they beat South Yorkshire 2-1 at Grimethorpe with goals from Iain O'Hare (Harrogate and Craven) and David Cooke (Hambleton).

York City Boys Under-14s football team drew 1-1 draw with Grimsby and were narrowly beaten by Bradford in their latest matches.

The U14s tackle Spen Valley at home on Saturday and entertain Wakefield on Saturday, December 8. Both matches kick off at 10.30am. Players should meet at the Wigginton Sports Club by 9.45am in shirt and tie with £2 for refreshments.

The end-of-season presentation evening is to be held on Friday, March 15 at 7.30pm at Melodies, Clifton Moor.

There will be a training session for the York City Boys Under 11s on Saturday from 9.30am to 10.30am at York Sixth Form College. Please take your kit ready for a team photograph.

Outstanding Primary Cup Round One matches are: St Aelred's v Haxby Road, Derwent v Dringhouses, Wigginton v Riverside, Hob Moor v Huntington, Scarcroft v Poppleton Road.

CROSS-COUNTRY

For pupils taking part in the York Schools' Cross-Country Championships on December 4, there is a training session on Sunday at 11.15am at the Racecourse - meeting at Hamilton Panthers FC pavilion on Knavesmire Road.
