A DIESEL spillage which stretched along more than six miles of roads caused mayhem in the Selby area last night.

A lorry started to leak fuel at the Barlby roundabout and diesel was spilled along the A19 and then along the A1041 as far as Camblesforth.

It caused two road accidents as vehicles skidded on the slippery road surface.

Emergency services were called to an accident at 7.40pm on the A1041, near the Black Dog pub at Camblesforth, and two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Two patients were taken by ambulance from the accident to Goole Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary.

A second incident, in which a motorcyclist skidded on the Barlby roundabout, was reported at 8.20pm.

Large pads were used to mop up the spillage before specialist Halcrow highways workers, acting on behalf of the Highways Agency arrived.

A sandgritter was then used to treat up to seven miles of road in what officials described as a "monster" spillage.

A Selby police spokesman said the lorry leaking the fuel had been identified and the situation resolved last night.
