LAWYERS for the British aviation enthusiasts who were arrested in Greece for alleged "spying" said today they were still waiting to find out what the 12 Britons are to be charged with.

York man Andy Jenkins, of Barkston Avenue, is among 12 people who were arrested after being accused of taking photographs of aeroplanes in Kalamata, Greece.

He is now in prison in Nafplion.

One of the detainees' lawyers, Yannis Zacharias, said today he was awaiting the formal text of expected new charges.

He thought the detainees would be brought before the investigating judge next Tuesday - it had earlier been thought it would be this Friday or on Monday.

Meanwhile, Jean Butt, the mother of the group trip organiser Paul Coppin, has accused British officials of doing nothing to help the plane spotters.

She said relatives had e-mailed the Home and Foreign Offices but no-one had been in touch.

"I haven't spoken to anyone," Mrs Butt, mother of Paul Coppin, 45, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Mr Coppin, 45, of Mildenhall, Suffolk, runs Touchdown Tours, which arranged the week-long trip.

Families of the 12 Britons and two Dutchmen accused of spying only heard of developments in their case through the media she said.

But yesterday the Greek authorities said they faced more charges, news Mrs Butt said she had to break to her son.

Mr Coppin's main worry was for his 51-year-old wife Lesley, who is being held in the Korydallos high security jail, she said.

"He has not had news of her since they were split up on Friday," Mrs Butt said.

"She is a woman in a cell with 14 other Greek ladies. She is a 51-year-old grandmother who suffers from asthma.

"When she went she was strip searched and degraded. The last time anyone heard from her was Sunday."

Mrs Butt denied any pictures had even been taken before the group's arrest.

"As far as I am concerned there was no photography," she said.

"Lesley, my daughter-in-law, was waiting in one of the vans looking after the cameras because they were told they couldn't take the cameras in so I really don't know what photographs they are talking about."
