AS a former President of York University Students' Union, I must protest at your editorial which offhandedly dismisses the campaign against cuts in portering (November 19).

Campus security was a serious issue in my day and it remains so; some may remember the awful murder ten years ago that finally forced university authorities to fit locks on accommodation blocks for the first time.

Cuts in security porter cover gamble with the safety of students, staff and visitors alike, at a time when we're supposed to be improving security in our public institutions.

The campaign against these cuts, not just by the Students' Union, but also by the porters and other staff through their trade unions, has been determined and committed.

Having to ask people to dress up as elephants (and not unreasonably reimbursing them) seems to me simply to show how difficult it can be to get media coverage for such an important campaign. Don't dismiss this issue so lightly. I never want to read another "murder on campus" headline and I'm sure you never want to have to print one.
