I THANK Councillor Andrew Waller for drawing the attention of your readers to the fact that I am heading up the scrutiny into street cleaning (Letters, November 13).
This scrutiny will be far more intense and thorough than anything suggested by him or his fellow Liberal Democrats, there will be no whitewash in the report, it will be honest and truthful.
His comment that the Conservatives supported a cut in the cleaning services budget is also welcome, as we believed that savings could be made and indeed were made.
The current problems are not as a result of these savings as he well knows.
May I remind Andrew that it was the Conservative Group at the last budget council who were able to reduce the council tax burden by one per cent, the first time in many years that the Conservatives had a direct influence on the Council Tax. Not a lot, but better than nothing.
The Liberal Democrats appear to have taken on the mantle of Old Labour in many ways, particularly the belief that problems can be solved by throwing money at them.
They also have a belief that reports must be produced on just about everything, with scant regard to any cost involved, and scant regard for the use of senior officers' time.
John C Galvin,
Conservative Group Leader,
Bridge Road,
Bishopthorpe, York.
