TELEVISION presenters Ant and Dec have reopened the latest new-look shopping outlet after a revamp involving York-based Shepherd Construction.
It is the £12 million redevelopment of the Royal Quays Outlet Centre in North Shields for Realm Outlet Centre Management.
Shepherd's reputation as a builder of outlet centres was firmly established when it built the £64 million BAA McArthurGlen shopping village on the site of the former Naburn Hospital, at Fulford, York.
The firm, which is now one of Europe's largest privately-owned engineering and construction companies with a turnover approaching £500 million, went on to build BAA McArthurGlen's £50 million outlet in Livingstone, Scotland.
Shepherd's contribution to the revamp of the four-year-old North Shields venture was worth £4 million. It created glazed canopies to keep shoppers out of the rain, added three new main stores of nearly 9,500 sq ft each and extensions and alterations to existing shops.
Other new Shepherd features include a food court and children's play area, attractively-paved walkways and improvements to the landscaping.
