SHOCKED motorists dialled 999 in droves when they saw a car driving along the A64 - in the wrong direction.

So many calls were made, police said, that the switchboard at York Police Station's control room was jammed.

It turned out that the driver, said to be an "elderly gentleman from Leeds," drove a total of ten miles on the wrong side of the road.

He was spotted last night driving westbound along the eastbound side of the A64 between Hull Road and the A19 interchange.

Sergeant Colin Ventress said: "He carried on past Fulford and entered the roadworks at Bond Hill where he was stopped by a traffic officer. "He had driven approximately ten miles completely unaware he was on the wrong side of the road.

"He was driving very slowly and thankfully no-one was injured.

"We received 26 calls from members of the public about the incident over a short space of time, which caused obvious problems in our control room."
