THREE of York's most famous children have been awarded the right to call themselves Honorary Freemen of the City today, following a unanimous vote by councillors.

Actress Dame Judi Dench and composer John Barry, plus the city's architectural godfather, John Shannon, were all given the award after a resounding endorsement from York's Lord Mayor, Councillor Irene Waudby.

She told a special meeting of City of York Council: "Each of them has contributed enormously to the life of this city."

Mr Shannon, who was nominated by York's Gild of Freemen, told the Evening Press: "Thirty-eight years of serving as chairman of the Civic Trust has enabled me to repay something of what I feel I owe the city, and to be made an Honorary Freeman of the second city of England is a very great honour."

Coun Waudby said Dame Judi, who clinched an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love, had also earned respect through her work with local charities.

Dame Judi said: "I am absolutely thrilled."

Mr Barry, who learned his craft in York, and went on to score dozens of great movies, said: "I'm thrilled, and very flattered."

Mr Barry's sister, June Lloyd-Jones, who lives in Fulford, said: "They're all worth it; a wonderful trio."

Peter Stanhope, who nominated the film duo a year ago, said: "They are all very worthy candidates, and the honour is long overdue."

He also thanked Councillor Mark Waudby, for submitting the original motion.

No date has been fixed for an official awards ceremony.
