STUDENTS at Tadcaster Grammar School were congratulated on a year of achievement in all areas of school life at their annual speech day presentation.

The upper school speech day saw the older students at the school and former students receiving awards for their efforts and hard work.

Head teacher Geoff Mitchell said there were more prizewinners, certificate winners and award winners than ever before.

Looking back over the last school year, he spoke about trips abroad, concerts, charity fundraising events, the Duke of Edingburgh Award scheme achievements and sporting successes.

He also talked about the school's Reach Out scheme, where trained peer counsellors helped other students, and the work of the School Council.

Examination results had seen the school return to its place as one of the top ten comprehensives in the country for A-level results.

Building work over the year had seen a new ICT suite open and the astro turf pitch rejuvenated. The new science building was nearly ready to move into and plans were being drawn up for a new sixth form social area and three new classrooms.

Mr Mitchell finished by thanking governors, staff, parents and students past and present.

The guest speaker was former student Aidan Butterworth, a former England U15 and U18 international and now senior sports marketing manager for Adidas UK.
