WHAT could be the future for environmentally-friendly motoring was wheeled out in York today.

As part of the Evening Press-sponsored Planet York project, one of the first ever "hybrid" cars began a road test around the city.

Planet York is a year-long initiative aimed at making York one of the leading cities for energy efficiency in the UK.

The car, a Toyota Prius, is on loan from Clifton Moor-based York Toyota.

It runs on electricity at low speeds in city traffic, switching to unleaded fuel elsewhere, keeping emissions to a minimum.

The car recharges itself through normal driving, and its power is boosted by the electric engine at higher speeds. This means even more fuel is saved.

If tests are successful, the Prius could become a permanent fixture for council business in York.

Andy Hudson, the council's acting assistant director for environmental regulation, said: "We are always looking at new ways of reducing emissions from the council's vehicles. The environmental health team will be considering all the options when it comes to replacing vehicles.

"We have already tested a couple of electric cars and they are brilliant for use around town.

"However, the advantage of the Prius is its cells are recharged on the move and the car can go long distances," Mr Hudson added.

Planet York campaign manager Laura Collins said grants were available for residents or businesses wanting to make their vehicles "greener".
