energy city York was starting a major push today to take the lead in saving the planet.

A week dedicated to energy efficiency was beginning with a special meeting at the Environment Centre, Bull Lane, at 6.30pm.

The event gives advice on how the city's residents can make their everyday lives more green.

It is part of Planet York, a project which aims to make the city a world leader in saving energy by the end of the year.

York MP Hugh Bayley, who opened the initiative, said: "When I am in London, I cycle to the House of Commons, but I am sure there is a lot more I could be doing to save energy.

"I will be taking note of the advice on offer during Energy Efficiency Week."

Planet York sees the Evening Press join forces with the government-backed Energy Saving Trust, City of York Council and the York Energy Efficiency Advice Centre.

- A major DIY store is offering to foot the VAT bill for people fitting energy efficient products, such as loft insulation. The offer by B&Q runs until Sunday as part of Energy Efficiency Week.
