The foot and mouth outbreak has been controlled in this area of the Yorkshire Dales, but Selby appear to be influenced by a virulent new strain which causes them to continually open their mouths and put their foot in it with the referee.

They should have won their Yorkshire One game at North Ribblesdale but the hosts took it 17-14.

Slack tackling in the centre allowed two sloppy tries and a lack of discipline constantly cost attacking positions and a crucial penalty, which put the game beyond their reach.

Once again the forwards dominated possession and the backs looked a more solid unit, with Andy Bennett solid in the tackle and Tim Horner at full-back having his best game since joining the club.

The hosts were immediately under pressure but Selby were only able to show a Dave Batty penalty for all their work in the first quarter.

The first Ribblesdale try came against the run of play with a break by their centre in midfield and the touchdown coming near the posts for an easy conversion.

Selby still played the better rugby and were rewarded with two further Batty penalties to give them a half-time lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Selby unable to crack the home defence, and again a lack of concentration allowed the scrum- half to scoot in for a coverted try.

The visitors then cut loose and looked dangerous with the ball in the backs, but fell further behind when talking to the ref cost yards and then points.

The final score by Mike Parsonage on the wing was reward for his troubling the Settle team all afternoon when a kick through was not covered to allow the touchdown.
