YORK'S new drug squad has made its first big swoop.

A "significant amount" of heroin was seized by a 20-strong team, including the police dogs section, in a raid on a house off Gillygate.

The elite squad, which aims to "rid the streets" of dealers peddling hard drugs, burst into the property following a tip-off.

Detective Inspector Steve Barlow said the squad, consisting of a detective sergeant and five detective constables, was ready to "take on" the dealers.

He said: "If drug dealers in York want a fight, they will get one. The Gillygate raid was very successful - but it won't be the first.

"Our message is if you are going to deal drugs, then expect your front door to be put through.

Mr Barlow said taking out the dealers would have the "knock-on effect" of cutting the number of petty theft crimes which were being committed to feed heroin habits.

He said these crimes were particularly prevalent in South Bank and The Groves areas of York at present.

North Yorkshire Police's new drugs teams - based in the force's three areas - aim to tackle dealers and suppliers, particularly those who peddle Class A drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, although dealers of Class B drugs, such as cannabis, will also be targeted.

If anyone has information about drug dealers operating in the city they should contact the drugs squad on 01904 631321.

A man and woman have been arrested in connection with allegations of drug dealing, and released on bail.
