TRANSPORT seems to be the recurring theme in these old pictures of York's Petergate.
With today's passion for cars and buses, we often forget how simple getting from A to B could be just a few years ago.
In this picture, showing Petergate as it looked in 1885, horse-drawn cabs were the taxis of their day.
Taken by photographer Frances Firth, who died in 1898, this picture is a remarkable record of how times may have changed, but the street has remained much the same.
Copies of pictures from the past can be ordered from the Evening Press. A print measuring 7x5in costs £5 with 50p postage and packing. A 10x7 costs £7 (50p p+p), or a 12x8 costs £10 (£1 p+p). Finally, a 16x10 costs £17, also with £1 p+p. All sizes are approximate.
