THREE well-known figures of the City of York look set to be made its first Honorary Freemen of the 21st century.
Actress Dame Judi Dench, composer John Barry and retiring chairman of York Civic Trust, John Shannon, have all been backed as potential recipients of the honour by ruling Labour city councillors.
The final decision will have to be made at a meeting of the full City of York Council and from there the civic procedures can be put in motion for the honours to be bestowed.
Dame Judi and Mr Barry, both York-born stars who have found international success during their careers, were both nominated by Peter Stanhope, from Skelton, who was backed by his ward councillor Coun Mark Waudby.
Mr Shannon, who is stepping down from his chairman's post after more than 30 years, was nominated by the Gild of Freemen.
The nominations have been approved by the City of York Council's Executive of seven ruling councillors. Honorary freemen can be elected by councillors to "persons of distinction and any persons who have rendered eminent services to the borough" according the Local Government Act 1972.
