FIGHTING-fit soldiers from York are set to take on a gruelling challenge on the streets of the city to raise cash for the victims of the terrorist outrage in America.
Members of 2 Signal Regiment, based at Imphal Barracks, will run, cycle and row 3,400 miles - the distance between York and New York - to raise cash for the World Trade Center Fund.
Nine teams of eight soldiers will take it in turns to clock up the mileage on exercise machines in Parliament Street and at the Monks Cross shopping park for the event, which is expected to last 36 hours. Members of the public are being asked to back their efforts with donations.
Major Steve May, the Regiment's second-in-command, said: "We were struck by the enormity of the devastation of the World Trade Centre and wanted to do something to ease the plight of the victims of the tragedy."
The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, will visit the soldiers, who were awarded the Freedom of the City earlier this year, to lend her support.
The challenge starts at 9am on Friday and should be finished by 9pm on Saturday.
Donations can be made at either of the challenge sites or cheques can be made payable to The World Trade Centre Fund and sent to the Regimental Administrative Office, 2 Signal Regiment, Imphal Barracks, York, YO10 4AU.
