A WEBSITE is giving York youngsters a cheeky view of the city's hottest teen hang outs.

The Knowhere Guide to York site details "that hallowed spot where everyone hangs around with their mates dreaming of the time when they can get into the pubs or clubs".

Top spots, according to the unofficial guide, include Front Street, in Acomb, Tang Hall Lane and outside Marks and Spencer in Parliament Street.

The fountain outside the Disney Shop is also cheekily mentioned as "lots of fun when someone empties out a bottle of Fairy Liquid into it".

Newgate Market, off Parliament Street is controversially claimed to be a popular hang-out for underage smokers, while a city car park is tipped as a spot where a passing student may be persuaded to buy youngsters a litre of cheap cider.

The Knowhere Guide covers the whole of the UK and offers candid advice on all areas of towns and cities.

A spokesman for City of York Council said: "It's nice to see young people using the world wide web to share information in this way though we don't necessarily share their sense of humour!

"Some of the advice is clearly very tongue in cheek and if youngsters want to stay on the right side of the law they would be advised to ignore it.

"Meanwhile, the council will continue to work for the interests of young people and provide a diverse range of opportunities.

"It's particularly pleasing that our new skateboard park for youngsters at Fossbank has been acknowledged in the site."

Chief executive of York Tourism Bureau Gillian Cruddas said: "The site appears to contain some interesting and useful information for young people on York and we are always keen to encourage families and younger visitors to our city.

"There is some controversial advice on things to do in the city centre which will not be popular with everyone but we would hope that common sense will prevail as to how the information is interpreted and used."
