The City of York Girls' League got off to a bright start on Saturday despite the poor weather.
The girls' spirits weren't dampened by the torrential rain, although Grasshoppers under-16s would have felt gloomy following their thrashing at the hands of the more experienced York Ladies counterparts. Despite some brave goalkeeping, York Ladies stormed to a 23-0 win.
The best game of the day was the closely fought under-16s contest between New Earswick and Poppleton.
New Earswick had much of the play but lacked the finishing to respond to Poppleton's opening goal.
Earlier, at Wigginton, the Grasshoppers under-12s 'A' team struggled valiantly against York Tigers who eventually won 3-0. Heworth and New Earswick also ran out winners in this age group.
