STAFF at Going Places and Travelworld travel agencies in York and North Yorkshire were today waiting for news of potential job cuts.

Parent company Airtours has responded to a fall in air passengers in the wake of the U.S. terrorist outrage by announcing there will be 100 redundancies out of 12,000 across all its companies in Britain.

There are four Going Places agencies in York with other branches in Scarborough and Market Weighton, as well as a Travelworld in Selby.

A spokesperson for Airtours said the redundancies were relatively small, but inevitable, in order to reduce the impact of the effect of the atrocities in New York and Washington.

Managing directors of all subsidiaries were told at a meeting of Airtours HQ in Manchester to draw up a review of their businesses and to offer voluntary redundancies where possible.

"There will be a consultation period and we will look at the possibility of staff going part-time where they ask for it," said the spokesperson.
