Q My left arm and wrist have been aching for a while, but I'm getting pins and needles in my left hand. I have heard that chiropractic could help but I am worried about manipulation. What can you suggest?
A It sounds like you might be suffering from Carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition is caused by pressure on the median nerve which runs from the neck down the arm and into the wrist.
It is often the result of repetitive movements of the wrist, so hairdressers and people who spend a lot of time on computers are prone to it.
If you have concerns about manipulation you could try the gentler McTimoney chiropractic technique. Light adjustments will be made to your wrist and neck to help relieve pressure on the nerves. This in turn should help to reduce pain and increase mobility in your wrist and arm.
You will also be offered advice on how to help yourself once you leave the clinic and given preventative exercises where appropriate.
For further information, contact Oliver Grant a state registered McTimoney chiropractor at The Bay Clinic, Helmsley, telephone 01439 771111 or The Healing Clinic, Fulford Cross, York, on 01904 679868.
