THE Duke of York today began his new role as a special ambassador for trade and industry by visiting York Carriageworks Thrall Europa.
The Duke was shown the entire wagon-making process at the Holgate Road-based business. He met workers and management, then attended a meeting of members of York's business community.
The Duke's first stop within the wagon building shed saw him meet a team of welders being re-trained to work on a new order for 800 coal wagons.
Welding instructor Steve Harrison, of Rawcliffe, said the Duke seemed "very interested" in Thrall's work.
"It is great for the company and great for the workers to have him here. He showed a genuine interest."
The Duke then spoke with wagon builders Phillip Bryan, of Acomb, and Trevor Wilson, of Holgate.
Both agreed his visit was a boost for Thrall.
"I was dead chuffed when I heard he was coming; it has to be good for the company," said Trevor.
"Let's hope it raises our profile and brings a few more orders in," Phillip added.
From there, the Duke saw a finished wagon being tested for safety, before heading into the meeting.
The meeting, a round table discussion with major investors, included representatives from Accent Technology, Berkeley Process Control, TSYS, Adaytum and Westinghouse Rail Systems, as well as Aurega, which is part of the German-based Siemens Group.
Thrall's director of service parts, Michael Robinson, welcomed the Duke's visit.
He said: "We were very pleased to welcome the Duke to Thrall Europa and show him the work we are doing here. This is an excellent day for the company."
The Duke also attended a lunch at York Racecourse in his honour, and later went on to meet leaders of the Parish Leisure Association in Alne, near Easingwold.
