ANTI-WAR campaigners are to take to the streets of York to demonstrate against possible military action in retaliation for the terrorist outrage in America.

Protest plans were drawn up at a public meeting in the city last night where more than 60 people heard from a range of speakers which included representatives of the Green Party, the Socialist Alliance and the city's Muslim community.

The meeting resolved to unite under the banner "York To Stop The War" and to mount a determined campaign.

A demonstration is set to be held in St Sampson's Square next Saturday and the group plans to hold a candle-lit vigil in Parliament Street on the day any military action begins.

Chris Fuller, from the Socialist Alliance, told the meeting that while it was right for people to feel disgusted at the attacks on America, any military action would only lead to the loss of more innocent lives.

Christian peace campaigner Maurice Vassie, a member of the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship, said that while the US Government's reasons for wanting to imprison or kill terrorist Osama bin Laden were understandable, doing so would not stop the resentment caused by injustices that were "so evident in the Muslim world".

Yusuf Tumilty, a York Muslim, told the meeting: "No Muslim could do what these people did that day. These are political extremists."
