TWO new football leagues for girls in York kick off tomorrow.
The GOAL (Girls' Opportunities at All Levels) project, a partnership between
City of York Council's York Leisure Office, the North Riding County FA and local
clubs, has led to the creation of new leagues for under-12s and under-16s teams.
Clubs including Heworth, New Earswick, Poppleton,
Wigginton Grasshoppers and York Ladies have entered.
"We started the league because we wanted to involve more girls in football and give them the opportunity to compete," said
City of York Girls' Football League secretary Chris Hanks.
"I'm sure other clubs will
join when they see what we're offering in York."
YLO community leisure officer Mark Wilson said, "A lot of hard work has been done over the past 12 months to get to this stage and everyone who has
worked on the project can be proud of what they have achieved so far."
Barbara Owen, the New Earswick manager, said: "Girls' football is the fastest
growing sport in Britain. I'm delighted that girls in York now have the chance to take part in a competitive league."
Poppleton manager Clare Milling, said: "It's a great opportunity for the girls of York to develop their football skills. We're all very excited
at Poppleton Football Club."
Training sessions and matches are taking place around the city.
Those wanting to join one of the new teams, or to find out more about the league should call Mark Wilson on York (01904) 553405.
