HIS Royal Highness the Duke of York is set to visit one of York's key employers, Thrall Europa, early next month.

In his first official engagement as Special Representative for International Trade and investment, the Duke will be shown round the US rail freight manufacturers' Holgate Road plant on Monday, as an example of American investment in the region.

Concerns were raised recently over the future of the company, which employs more than 300 workers, following its planned merger with US-based Trinity Industries.

It would eventually mean a change of name to TRNX.

The merger is currently being investigated by the US Justice Department.

Thrall director of service parts Michael Robinson said: "The Duke of York will be given a comprehensive tour of the plant and see a working demonstration of the new wagon we're producing for Railtrack.

"He will be introduced to staff working on the order.

"We're all really looking forward to it."

Prince Andrew will also pay a visit to new community facilities at Alne, near Easingwold, which were funded through his Community Initiative Award Scheme.

Members of the Alne Parish Leisure Association (APLA) will greet the Duke at its newly-built children's playground and sports area, where he will plant a tree and watch youngsters play football.

The association bought the land for community use in 1999 after an arduous 18-year fundraising campaign.

A nature and fitness area is being developed and it is hoped applications for funding will approved to build three tennis courts and a multi-games area.

APLA treasurer Robert Brech said: "It's an absolute honour that he has chosen to visit Alne. "I'm sure all the village will be out waving Union Jacks."
