YORK Tennis Club have bounced back in the face of adversity.
The Clifton Park-based club has faced two major setbacks in recent months as their pavilion burnt down last year and the courts were flooded in winter.
A new pavilion, part of a £40,000 project which includes fencing and landscaping, was opened on Saturday by Gerry Slack, president of the IT Sports York and District Mixed Tennis League, of which York are members.
He was accompanied by his wife, Floss, the York area's representative on the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association, and Paul Kenyon of PK Accommodation, who supplied the new pavilion.
A special presentation was also made to Jack Butcher, who has been a member and coach at York for about 30 years.
The day also saw the launch of the club's new initiative to improve its junior section under LTA licensed coach Bev Cairns.
Since joining the club last month she has recruited around 50 new juniors - doubling that section of the club's membership.
Meanwhile, York have reached the final of the Yorkshire Veterans' competition after a 3-1 victory over Rustlings (Sheffield) at Clifton Park.
York will be at home in the final against champions Hallamshire.
Scores (York names first): H Pallister and P Thomas bt I Sargeant and G Travis 6-4 6-2; Pallister/Thomas bt P Horsfield and D Smith 6-2 6-0; R Audsley and N Giltrap lost to Sargeant/Travis 6-4 6-1; Audsley/Giltrap bt Horsfield/Smith 7-5 6-1.
