By knowing what animal, plant and food products can and cannot bring home from holiday, everyone can help prevent the spread of plant, animal and even human diseases.
Remember the golden rule: If in doubt, keep it out!
WHAT COUNTRY ARE YOU TRAVELLING FROM?
Different restrictions apply depending on where a product comes from. Imports of meat and plant products from European Union (EU) countries are generally permitted and controlled plant material can be brought in personal baggage, provided it is free from pests and disease.
EU countries are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Spain and the UK
WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING?
From EU Countries - There are import restrictions on beef under the BSE controls. Restrictions may be in place for other animal products due to disease outbreaks. Imports of raw (unpasteurised) milk are prohibited.
From non-EU Countries - Personal imports from countries outside the EU are restricted, depending on what the product is and how it has been prepared, eg:
Food - products for food use should be suitable for human consumption.
Meat - Maximum of one kilogram of meat products, cooked in hermetically sealed containers, such as can or jar. Raw meat is prohibited.
Dairy - Imports of milk and dairy products for personal consumption are generally prohibited, with certain exceptions (list available from DEFRA).
Plants - most rooted plants are prohibited.
Fruit - No more than two kilograms.
Flowers and foliage - a single bouquet - fresh or dried
Seeds - five retail packets. Potato seeds are not permitted.
Endangered species - Products from exotic or endangered species require special licences.
