A WARNING message about York murder victim Michael Brolly was broadcast to pubs across the city centre just minutes before he was fatally attacked, the Evening Press can today reveal.

The message, which warned of a large group of males containing Mr Brolly and said: "Advise do not admit", was sent on a pager system which tells pubs about potential trouble. Michael Brolly had previously been the subject of an order excluding him from pubs in the city though he was not banned at the time of the attack.

The message was received on pubwatch pagers at 8.57pm on Sunday. Police have said the incident which led to Mr Brolly being attacked by up to seven people in Low Ousegate began at 8.53pm.

It can take several minutes for messages to arrive on pagers from the time when they are sent.

The origin of the message is not known, but any pub staff can put out alerts on the system.

Police have said Mr Brolly was involved in a fight which is believed to have started in Edwards pub, in George Hudson Street.

He was then chased through the streets by the group before being attacked in Low Ousegate.

- A 32-year-old man, who was arrested in the city on Monday, was due to appear before magistrates in York today charged with affray.
