YORK country and western singer Suzy Martell has battled her way to the top to bring out her debut CD.
The cabaret and club songstress was so ill two years ago she was told to give up singing.
But the determined performer refused to give in and is launching her CD, Broken Hearts In Nashville, next week.
Suzy, 31, of Melrosegate, Heworth, underwent two agonising throat operations to remover a cancerous tumour from her vocal chords. The singer was out of action for a year as she completed intensive speech and language therapy.
She said: "They told my parents I would never sing again and at times I wondered if it was worth it. I had to go back to basics and learn how to talk again without damaging my voice."
And months after two throat operations, Suzy was admitted to hospital for a hysterectomy.
She said: "After the surgery I went on holiday to recover in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was spotted by a record producer who offered me a contract. It was like a dream come true."
Things did not run smoothly for Suzy when she arrived in the States to start recording.
She said: "They wanted another 'Shania' clone and no way would I sell out. I was not prepared to compromise." So the determined singer set up her own label, Timber Wolf Records, to bring out the live album.
And the tireless performer insisted the launch venue would have to be her home city for next Wednesday's invitation-only gig at the Post Office Social Club in Marygate.
