MEMBERS at a former York social club could see their old drinking place turned into a "des res".

Members of the popular York City Arms, in Fawcett Street, supped their last pints on Sunday.

The building had been owned by the York Amalgamation of Anglers and York City Baths Club for nearly 30 years.

But it has now been bought by York property company Treatprefer, which has applied to City of York Council for permission to make changes to the listed building.

The firm has applied to change the building's use from a social club to flats.

It then plans to make "external and internal alterations" - including demolition work and the building of an extension - to provide eight flats and a detached block of 14 flats.

John Skelton, chartered surveyor with design and architectural company Lawrence, Hannah and Skelton, said the flats would be "good quality, middle-market properties".

He said: "We see this proposed development as providing a sustainable use for an attractive listed building that has become somewhat run-down over the years.

"The 14 flats would have two bedrooms and come with parking facilities, while the eight flats would be one-bedroom units without parking.

"They would be quite striking, modern buildings."

City of York Council development control officer Jonathan Carr said the process was at a "very early stage".

He said: "There is a full consultation process to complete and we are some way from making a recommendation.

"We will be consulting with our environment conservation section, highways and environmental health departments.

"There is also the usual consultation with people living adjacent to the proposed development."

Mr Carr said that because the building is listed, "every effort" will be made to preserve its appearance.

Outgoing club steward Mark Welburn said: "The City Arms has been a great place to go for a drink and a laugh.

"I can't comment about what it might or might not become, but I do know the punters are sad to see it closing."
