FIREFIGHTERS in York have responded to the devastation in New York by pledging cash for their U.S. counterparts.
York firefighters have promised proceeds from their annual beer festival will be sent to victims from the New York Fire Department and their families.
And they are appealing for sponsorship from York businesses to help boost the appeal.
Firefighter Julian Hansen said: "We are sending 75 per cent of the money to New York, and the rest will go to the Fire Service Benevolent fund.
"I don't think anyone can believe what has happened. It's very frightening."
The fire service is asking businesses for support to sponsor a barrel of beer at the event.
Local breweries and some firms from further afield will be supplying the beer at the mini festival, at the Clifford Street station on Saturday, September 29.
Tickets for the event cost £3 and are on sale from the station.
People wishing to sponsor a barrel or make individual donations should contact the Clifford Street station.
