PEPPERONI, a winner at York last month, can hit the jackpot at Doncaster tomorrow.
The Tim Easterby-trained two-year-old lines-up with 21 others to bid for the £200,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes, a race confined to horses which were bought at the Doncaster sales this time last year.
Pepperoni, who has won three races in the meantime, stamped himself as a more than useful sprinter when clinching the prestigious Roses Stakes on Knavesmire at the Ebor meeting.
That success came just five days after he had scored a good win in the Horn Blower Stakes at Ripon.
Tough, talented and genuine, Pepperoni will have the services of Kevin Darley as he bids for tomorrow's mighty prize. A bold attempt is anticipated.
Easterby can also clinch the EBF Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery Handicap with Silver Band, the mount of smart apprentice Keith Dalgleish.
Silver Band got off the mark at Catterick last month and has since finished a good second to her stablemate, Travelling Times, at Ripon.
That winner franked the form with a subsequent success on Knavesmire and it is now expected that Silver Band can return to the winning trail with only a featherweight to carry.
The £40,000 Tote Trifecta Portland Handicap has, as usual, attracted a competitive line-up of sprinters for its specialist distance of five-and-a-half furlongs.
Plenty of names can be put in the frame as likely winners, but nothing appeals more as a value-for-money bet than Ambitious, who has strong claims at around 16-1.
Ken Ivory's tough six-year-old had no chance at the draw against Jessica's Dream - one of tomorrow's favourites - at Sandown last time. Up against it at the weights on her previous start in a non-handicap at Warwick, where she finished a good third to Ghazal, she deserves the chance to get back on top here.
With smart apprentice Chris Catlin in the saddle, Ambitious is ambitiously awarded the nap vote.
Frankie Dettori, who rode two winners at Newcastle yesterday, can repeat the feat tomorrow.
Fresh from his magnificent triumph aboard Fantastic Light in Ireland last Saturday, Dettori can score on the highly-regarded Dubai Status (1-30) and Masilia (3-40), who makes the journey from John Oxx's Irish stable to contest the £40,000 Park Hill Stakes.
At Goodwood, one-time Classic hope Nayef will surely prove hard to beat in the £40,000 Select Stakes, while Den's-Joy, a winner at Thirsk last Saturday, can oblige again in the Goodwood Motor Circuit Handicap.
