TWO people were killed and 11 people injured in two serious accidents on North Yorkshire roads at the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, a driver died after his car hit a tree on the A64 at the Sand Hutton turning near Stockton-on-the-Forest.

The driver had to be cut free from his grey Hyundai Accent car by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The man was travelling towards York when he was in a collision with a red Almera car, travelling in the opposite direction, and then ploughed into a tree.

He was taken to York District Hospital but died later.

The family in the Almera car, from Whitby, were all uninjured.

Witness should contact 01723 509512 and ask for PC Mark Savage.

A woman died and 11 people were injured in an accident on the A165 Scarborough-Bridlington road near the Royal Oak at Hunmanby at about 3.30pm yesterday.

Sergeant George Mead, of North Yorkshire Police, said a green Volvo S40 saloon was in collision with a blue Vauxhall Astra, which then collided with a red Vauxhall Corsa.

A total of 11 people were injured. They were taken to Scarborough District Hospital by both ambulance and air ambulance.

"A female passenger in the blue Astra received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Five people have been detained at Scarborough hospital and the others have been released," said Sergeant Mead.

He asked any witnesses to contact Traffic Constable Nick Skelton or Scarborough Control on 01723 500300.

Five passengers injured in Friday's coach crash on the A64 in York were today still recovering in hospital.
