YORK Acorn and Heworth sit proudly on top of the National Conference league third division with maximum points from three games.

They are the only sides to have a 100 per cent winning record with Acorn having the edge on points difference.

Acorn turned in a masterful second half showing to overcome previously undefeated Crosfields 34-8 at home.

Having gone in at 6-0 down at the break after conceding a 10th minute try to Matt Mahoney, converted by stand off Jimmy Williams, Acorn's hopes took another knock just three minutes after the restart when Williams notched the first of his two field goals, the second coming five minutes later.

However, sandwiched in between came Acorn's first points - a John Hough penalty. Acorn's domination began on 52 minutes when substitute winger Kevin Brundett marked his National Conference league debut with a fine try.

Acorn edged in front for the first time on 58 minutes with a brilliant individual try by substitute scrum half Johnny Waldron.

Minutes later Acorn increased their lead to 16-8 with a try by loose forward Rob Lee. Brundett added the conversion.

Acorn were on a roll now and on 64 minutes stand off Darren

Callaghan romped over and

Brundett's conversion pushed Acorn into 22-8 lead.

Nicky Caldwell crashed through for yet another Acorn try.

Brundett was again successful with the conversion attempt, a feat he repeated on 78 minutes when converting Acorn's final try scored by Callaghan after good work by Gareth Lloyd.

Heworth turned in an excellent second half performance at Millom to come away from Cumbria with a26-14 victory.

Millom led 10-6 at the interval with a couple of tries by Graham Lupton, one being goaled by Paul Evans. But the Villagers were never out of the reckoning with Steve Barnard's try, improved by kicker Dave Carling, keeping them in touch.

Heworth moved up a couple of gears after the interval with Mick Harrison and Brendan Carlyle combining to send in Sam Clarke for a try which was improved by Carling's boot to give Heworth the lead.

Evans and Carling them exchanged penalties before Carlyle scored a crucial try with the reliable Carling adding the conversion to give Heworth a bigger lead.

Although Evans reduced the arrears with another penalty the key try for Heworth came 15 minutes from the end when Mark Green crossed with Carling's fifth successive kick sealing a great win for the Black and Whites.
