STAFF with the York-based rail company, GNER, have been praised for their "tireless and sensitive efforts" to overcome the effects of two tragic accidents and restore passenger confidence.

The company has won the Back on Track award for its recovery programme and industry leadership since the Hatfield tragedy last October and the Selby crash in February.

GNER won this new category, introduced in the light of the disruption passengers and operators have endured over the past year, at the annual National Rail Awards.

"The award judges said: "GNER was tragically the victim of two major incidents within the space of six months and has overcome more challenges than most in its sensitive but positive handling of the post-Hatfield and Selby problems."

Following the two accidents the company launched a major recovery programme called Operation Springboard.

Its chief executive, Christopher Garnett, said: "This accolade is dedicated to the many passengers who suffered from the rail disasters and subsequent disruption, and recognises the fantastic care and professionalism shown by GNER's 3,000 people during one of the most difficult and traumatic periods in recent rail history."
