YORK survivors of one of the Second World War's toughest campaigns are to proudly display their association's National Standard this weekend - in the year they celebrate half a century together.

This weekend, hundreds of ex-servicemen and women are to gather at the Eden Camp museum, near Malton, for their annual Veterans Parade - among them York-based members of the Burma Star Association (BSA).

The association, set up for soldiers who fought in the long campaign against the Japanese in Burma, is currently celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

But an extra reason to celebrate for the York veterans, is that the North East area - which includes York - has just been handed the BSA National Standard for twelve months.

This, said York branch chairman John Ward, is "a real honour" for the branch.

He said: "It really does mean a lot for the association to have the standard. It moves around between the various areas on an annual basis and the onus is on that association to parade it as and when required.

"An event such as the Veterans Parade is certainly a fitting place to carry the standard."

John, 76, from Acomb, served with the Corps of Royal Engineers between 1943 and 1947.

After taking part in the invasion of Europe, he went to fight in Burma, a campaign he described as "very cruel".

"I only saw the tail end of it so I did not see as much roughness as some of the other lads had done.

"I still saw enough to know it was a cruel war out there. We were fighting the Japanese, and the Japanese do not surrender."

A spokesman for Eden Camp said: "The parade attracted around 1,000 veterans last year, with over 100 standards on display.

"It was both a moving and memorable sight.

"We are hoping for another good turnout this year, and would encourage all veterans to attend the day as our guests."

lThe Veterans Parade takes place this Sunday. Organisers recommend arriving at 1pm "at the latest". A service, to be led by the Rev John Manchester, is due to start at 2.30pm.
