'Their name liveth for evermore.' These are the words inscribed on the monument at Station Rise - York's remembrance to those who died in both world wars.

However, anyone taking a closer look at the names will see that about 25 per cent of them are so badly worn and eroded as to be almost unreadable. The remainder, although legible, are rapidly fading. A plaque tells us that a full list of names is available for inspection at Railway Headquarters nearby.

It would be possible therefore to restore all the names either by re-carving or highlighting in gold paint.

This need not be an expensive process as I am sure many York people from all walks of life would happily volunteer some time and effort to ensure these individuals are not 'forgotten'.

Perhaps it could be a community project for young offenders?

As we approach another Remembrance Day it will be interesting to see if those responsible for the monument will respond or will we see yet another example of hypocrisy where reality differs completely from ideology?
