I was moved by the story of Harry Baum (Evening Press, September 4) who, as a young boy fleeing the Nazis, was given refuge by a family here in York. It is an inspiring tale of hope and compassion.
And yet, if I remember my history lessons, at the same time as this boy was welcomed to a new life, the nastier elements of the press were busy venting their hatred against 'Jewish refugees' who they claimed were 'flooding in' and should be 'sent back'.
Sounds familiar? I'm inspired that people of courage and principle like the Hughes family ignored such rubbish, and did give refuge and hope to Harry Baum and countless like him.
It's a lesson for us now, not to give in to those who preach hate, but to realise our own humanity by offering a safe haven to today's refugees.
