MARC Thompson is pushing for a rapid senior squad recall after savouring a rare lucky break, writes Dave Stanford.

The York City utility player looked to be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after it was feared he had broken his ankle in the Minstermen's penultimate pre-season friendly at Ilkeston.

It was a major blow to the 19-year-old, who suffered a terrible run with injuries last season and was looking to re-establish himself as a regular in manager Terry Dolan's starting XI.

However, after it was expected Thompson would be ruled-out until October, the teenager surprised everyone by completing a full 90 minutes for the reserve team at Bury in midweek.

A delighted Thompson explained the confusion surrounding his injury by revealing a small, 'extra' bone had been growing on his fibula causing most of last season's problems.

That has now snapped off and his discomfort has vanished.

"Now it's just floating around in my ankle but it's not giving me any problems," said Thompson.

"I took a bad tackle on it in midweek but it held up well so everything is fine.

"I have to have it strapped up when I play but it's not a problem, there's no pain now."

Although he was having to be satisfied with a watching brief against Halifax today, Thompson admitted he was simply delighted to be back in contention.

"It's big relief," he admitted. "I can crack on with training now and try and get back in the first team.

"I was out a long time with it last year and now I've got the all clear I would love to be involved as soon as possible.

"There's every incentive to be involved now, the lads are playing well and so it would be nice to come into a side doing well.

"It is a small squad as well so you know you will get your chance eventually."
