A SON of York is being sought to play King Richard - along with assorted royalty, lords and ladies and the murderers of the Princes in the Tower.

A design guru, people to work backstage, and anyone who can sew costumes are also needed.

On the next two Saturdays (September 8 and 15), at the old St Martin's Church in Micklegate, York, between 10am and 4pm, the York Shakespeare Project will be holding auditions for its first production - Richard III - which is running next March.

The group, which intends to perform all 37 Shakespeare plays in city centre venues

over the next 20 years and create an outreach programme of community workshops, says the first show must set a high standard.

It wants to cast up to 41 speaking parts, as well as find people to help with design, technical support such as helping with the set, lighting and sound, stage management, and wardrobe and other roles such as props and prompt. Would-be actors will be asked to bring two short Shakespearean pieces -

but not the opening speech from Richard III.

Alternative test pieces will be available at the auditions.

Chairman Frank Brogan said: "We are looking to match the standards of the Mystery Plays in York Minster. We are now looking for the best cast and supporting team that York and its environs has to offer."

Chris Rawson, the group's production co-ordinator, said: "It is rare for amateur

actors to get the chance to perform Shakespeare because it is difficult for local groups to put on.

"We are looking for a mixture of experience and freshness and people who want to be part of something new and exciting.

"You never know, we might get some people who will stay with the project for all 20 years.

"This is not just about acting - we want people with interests in all aspects of

theatrical life to come along."
