We are Alan Ayckbourn fans, so visiting Scarborough to see his latest plays it was only right that we should look for a new snack spot.
Perched as it is at the top of Olivers Mount there is a commanding view of Scarborough's castle and the South Bay. On entry, there is a spacious room with both conventional caf furniture and sofas with low coffee tables while beyond is a conservatory.
There is nothing sophisticated about the menu. From the selection of pasta, jacket potatoes, omelettes and sandwiches Ann chose a white toastie with home-cured ham and cheese (£3.45). It came with an attractive salad garnish. An immaculately clean condiment tray with a selection of dressings was produced on request. Before long Ann was facing an empty plate.
My choice of cottage cheese and pineapple salad (£4.65) raised an eyebrow. But what a salad! Two types of lettuce plus 14 other items including plain cucumber and pieces diced in mint.
Ann decided to call a halt until she saw my apple pie and cream (£2.50) which I cheerfully shared with her. In return she shared her bottle of mineral water (95p) with me.
Other snackers were tackling a range of food from the daily specials, fish and chips, French onion soup (£2.50), broccoli and cheese bake (£4.95) to large Yorkshire puddings and grills. Some had no more than a coffee and a sandwich.
It would appear that the management has a sense of humour. Prominently displayed is a sign "we know that children are a joy to behold. Please beholding on to them when in the restaurant". Amen to that!
This venue was certainly worth the drive up the Mount and opens from 10am-5pm.
