FOR generations York has been a popular place for shopping, where visitors have been able to wander in and out of the stores.
But this week's pictures show a line of shops changing beyond recognition.
The picture, taken probably in the mid-1950s, shows the entrance to Spurriergate, with Dunn and Co, the men's outfitters on the right at the start of a row of old-style shops, including a number of small family businesses.
Copies of pictures from the past can be ordered from the Evening Press.
A print measuring 7inx5in costs £5 with 50p postage and packing.
A 10x7 costs £7 (50p p&p), a 12x8 costs £10 (£1 p&p) and 16x10 costs £17 (£1 p&p).
All sizes are approximate.
Payment by cheque should be made to York & County Press and sent to Anne Wood, Photographers, Evening Press, 76-86 Walmgate, York, YO1 9YN.
