AN inquiry into the controversial Coppergate plans has been delayed because it clashes with Jewish holy days.

The inquiry into the planning permission granted for the Coppergate II shopping centre, and an appeal by York Tomorrow, which proposes using the land around Clifford's Tower for a public park, had been due to be held on September 25.

But the Planning Inspectorate has postponed it because it clashes with Jewish New Year celebrations.

A spokesman for the inspectorate said: "This would prejudice some people from attending and giving evidence at the inquiry."

The site of the proposed scheme has particular significance for Jews because of the 12th century massacre which occurred at the site of Clifford's Tower.

A new date has yet to be set for the inquiry.
