I MUST tell you how much my party of friends enjoyed the Proms at Castle Howard on August 18.
This was mainly due to the brilliant, extrovert conductor of the English National Orchestra, who was such a character. He sang, danced and really seemed to enjoy the music as much as his appreciative audience. He also wore the most amazing tailcoat depicting a huge flag to present Land Of Hope And Glory, which went down very well especially as he repeatedly reminded us all he was Welsh!
It was just the best evening. First we were entertained by the David Uraquart brass band while we started our picnics, then we were thrilled to silence to watch a lone Spitfire fly over us featuring a stunt display to the music of the RAF March Past and the theme from The Great Escape. This was very moving and made me feel proud and patriotic, but sad to think of all the brave young men who never came back or were locked away for many years.
The programme was inspired because for once we knew every piece of music. The fireworks were brilliant and it was a fine warm evening which was a bonus.
We are already looking forward to next year's concert but this one will be a hard act to follow. Thanks so much to all who helped to organise such a superb evening.
