Massive tailbacks and traffic jams were again expected to clog up Britain's roads today as families head back home after the great Bank Holiday exodus.

Chaos was expected to reign on the country's roads as tens of thousands of holidaymakers are expected to head back home from the coast and weekend retreats.

Meanwhile, two men were taken to hospital with chest and head injuries when their Ford Fiesta hit a tree in Stockton Lane, York.

The car's passenger is believed to have crashed through the windscreen. Two ambulance crews were called to the scene at about 9.20pm on Saturday.

The men are both in their early 20s and from the York area.

Sergeant Mick Crome said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw the grey Fiesta driving in York during the day."

Anyone with information should contact York traffic police on 01904 669717.

The men's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
