CHILDREN across York have been going crackers for clackers as the city saw the start of the search for the UK's clacking champ.
Clackers - now known as Klik Klaks - have become popular again after first being seen on toyshop shelves in the 1970s.
The toy, featuring two balls on a string, were banned from many schools in the 70s as they could shatter as they were 'clacked' together.
But manufacturers insist the new toys are "practically indestructible".
And they are well and truly being put to the test, as the national clacking contest was launched yesterday outside Toyworld Toymaster, in King's Square.
Barbara Potter, assistant manager, said: "Quite a few people turned up, adults and children, and while the children entered the competition the adults couldn't resist having a go, too.
"Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves."
